Many of these modern features help drivers to avoid ever needing to take a trip to the collision repair shop in the first place. What are crumple zones?
Seatbelts and airbags were created to help keep passengers safe in the event a collision occurs by keeping them secured in the vehicle and bracing their impact. Crumple zones work in a much different way but offer many of the same benefits. The frames and structures of modern vehicles are designed with areas that essentially crumple under certain amounts of force. However, the frame surrounding the cabin of the vehicle is built to maintain its shape and generally uses stronger materials.
How do they protect passengers?
When a vehicle with crumple zones has an impact with another vehicle or any other object, these zones take the majority of the impact and damage. They effectively slow down the collision and absorb the force so that the passengers don’t have to—the cabin is reinforced so the passengers remain safe.
