If I could rate this place 20 / 10, I would!!! I've come to Schiro's a few times now and each time I'm amazed by the excellent service I receive. Today I came in for a window issue. As the automotive industry has progressed, vehicle technology and designs have gone through many changes. Early automobiles completely lacked safety features, but as accidents began to occur and the destructive potential of these machines was realized, safety regulations became necessary. Today’s automobiles are by far the safest ever put on the roads due to a wide range of different safety features. Many of these modern features help drivers to avoid ever needing to take a trip to the collision repair shop in the first place. Crumple zones and similar features help to protect passengers in case a collision does occur. Read on to learn how.
What are crumple zones?
Seatbelts and airbags were created to help keep passengers safe in the event a collision occurs by keeping them secured in the vehicle and bracing their impact. Crumple zones work in a much different way but offer many of the same benefits. The frames and structures of modern vehicles are designed with areas that essentially crumple under certain amounts of force. However, the frame surrounding the cabin of the vehicle is built to maintain its shape and generally uses stronger materials.
How do they protect passengers?
When a vehicle with crumple zones has an impact with another vehicle or any other object, these zones take the majority of the impact and damage. They effectively slow down the collision and absorb the force so that the passengers don’t have to—the cabin is reinforced so the passengers remain safe. Vehicles with crumple zones essentially sacrifice their own bodies to protect those of the passengers within.
Do crumple zones make vehicles weaker?
Some people think that because a vehicle has areas which are made to crumple on impact that the vehicle is weaker. These assumptions couldn’t be further from the truth, and safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety make this clear. Crumple zones are, in fact, among the most essential aspects of safety in modern vehicles.
